Critical Headwaters

This region hosts the headwaters of streams and rivers renowned for native game fish including at risk species such as cutthroat and bull trout, and is the source water region for much of southern Alberta including Lethbridge and the surrounding irrigation districts.

Water Security

Southern Alberta’s water security depends on the health of its headwater landscapes, because almost all our water comes from snow and rain that fall on the Eastern Slopes.

The Oldman River system and its tributaries, including the Crowsnest and Castle Rivers, deliver vitally important water to the communities and irrigation districts of southern Alberta, while also sustaining riparian ecosystems and important fisheries.

Managing levels of human disturbance and development is critical to keeping the headwaters healthy.  That’s one of the key reasons why the Livingstone Landowners intervene in development proposals and ensure that they are sited and implemented as carefully and responsibly as possible.

Without water security, we have nothing.  And without healthy land, we won’t have water security. Learn more in our recently released video: Finding Water: Healthy Land, Healthy Stream
