Windy Point Wind Park Cancelled

Dear LLG Members:

Windy Point Wind Park Cancelled

Approval has been cancelled for the controversial Windy Point Park wind farm proposed for the MD of Pincher Creek.  The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) revoked its previous approval in a decision released last week.  At the same time the regulatory agency closed all timeline extension and amendment applications related to the project.

This decision follows numerous concerns raised last year about the project by LLG and area residents.

The 63 MW Windy Point wind farm, which was proposed to be built in an area with significant native prairie, was originally approved by the AUC in 2012.

Since then, the project received numerous timeline extensions for construction, and in March of 2018, the owners filed an application to amend the project. In November of last year, the MD of Pincher Creek denied the MD development permit after numerous concerns with the project were raised by constituents (local residents and LLG members).

In April of this year, Windy Point asked the AUC to place the project in abeyance indefinitely while they reviewed the project design in response to public concerns. The AUC allowed another delay but ordered Windy Point to file an update by the end of October.

That did not happen. On November 13, the AUC announced its decision to rescind the previous approval and close the applications.  If Windy Point wants to revive the project in the future they must start from the beginning with a new application.

Regards,

LLG Board of Directors
